Funded by Able! $350,000 to support expansion to an additional floor backed by Josh Jones-Dilworth and Noah Kagan

Since day one, Capital Factory has set out to connect the best and brightest entrepreneurs and to foster Austin’s innovative culture. We’ve excited to announce that we’ve partnered with Able, a local Austin startup, to access additional working capital so that we can continue expanding while equipping local entrepreneurs with the resources to succeed.

My first experience with Able was as a Backer, someone who agrees to fund a part of the loan. Jae from Chi’Lantro, a local (and personal) favorite food truck, approached me about becoming supporting their expansion. We often cater Chi’Lantro at Capital Factory events, and I was more than happy to help out. Throughout the process, I was impressed with Able’s mission to help the local businesses we love and support, grow, and scale. I was also personally excited to support one of my favorite local staples, and I’m now proud to be a Able Backer for Chi’Lantro who has since used the loan for the buildout of its first brick-and-mortar location in Austin.

We’ve seen firsthand at Capital Factory how powerful the support, mentorship, and encouragement of your peers can be. When the time came for us to consider options to fund our own expansion to an additional floor of our building, we chose to collaborate with Able because of that powerful network. We’re two-fold rewarded — backed by a local company that shares our mission and backed by a group of friends and family who believe in what we do. All of our Backers, entrepreneurs you know and love like Josh Jones-Dilworth and Noah Kagan are equally committed to supporting the Austin community, and we’re grateful for their support. Learn more about our Able loan on their website.

We’re proud to be part of the Able network and the Austin community, and grateful for all of the support and generosity we’ve seen from our networks since day one. We’re excited continue providing local Austin entrepreneurs with the tools they need to grow and succeed.

Keep Austin Hacking.

Capital Factory Founder Joshua Baer named to Aspen Institute's inaugural Braddock Scholars Program

We’re excited to announce that Joshua Baer, founder of Capital Factory, has been selected to serve as a member of the Aspen Institute’s inaugural Braddock Scholar’s Program to help selected entrepreneurs incorporate big company skills and knowledge into the scaling of some of the world’s most innovative organizations.

The 12- month program is designed to support selected entrepreneurs with high-level mentorship, peer-learning, and capital to fund key initiatives of the scholars choosing.

Participating in the Henry Crown Fellowship program at the Aspen Institute has been a transformative experience for me personally,” Baer said. “I’m excited to bring the power of the Aspen Institute network to support entrepreneurs in Austin through Capital Factory. We’ve got something working well locally and we’re ready to scale it to the next level with the help of Rick Braddock, Arjun Gupta, and the rest of the senior mentors.”

The program is made possible thanks to the generosity of Aspen trustee, Rick Braddock. Braddock, who had a distinguished and varied career in global business including several entrepreneurial activities, is serving as one of the senior mentors.

Entrepreneurs are great at starting businesses that solve important problems in new ways, but aren’t always effective at scaling these innovations. Many of the skills to do this come from spending time in big companies.” said Braddock. “We aim to bridge the ‘scaling gap’ by channeling the expertise of our mentors towards the challenges our scholars face.

The Braddock Scholars program is open to US based members of the Aspen Global Leadership Network (AGLN). Joining Baer as selected scholars of the inaugural cohort are:

  • Aimee Eubanks Davis, Founder, Beyond Z
  • Bart Houlahan, Jay Coen Gilbert, and Andrew Kassoy, Co-Founders, B Lab
  • Brent Jenks, President and CEO, Rare.org, Fish Forever
  • Jordan Kassalow, Founder and Co-Chairman, VisionSpring
  • Sheila Lirio Marcelo, Founder, Chairwoman and CEO, Care.com
  • Rob Price, President of Edible Arrangements
  • Eric Westendorf, CEO and Co-Founder, LearnZillion

Firefly Space Systems

Capital Factory is participating in Firefly Space Systems most recent investment round and Firefly is joining the Capital Factory Accelerator. Firefly provides low-cost, high-performance space launch capability for the under-served small satellite market.

We’ve never done anything in the space industry before or anything this capital intensive. Firefly doesn’t look like a typical company that would join an accelerator. Our investment doesn’t move the needle on the total amount they have already raised and the executive team is extremely experienced and each qualified to be a Capital Factory mentor in their own right.

So why would Firefly do it?

  • New to Austin and want to plug in to the community
  • Introductions to potential investors
  • Use our AngelList Syndicate to bundle up smaller investors into a single line on the cap table
  • Help recruiting software engineers and other talent
  • Amplify their message through our social media and PR channels

Why would Capital Factory do it?

  • Amazing management team with experience at Space X, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic
  • Huge industry fueled by small, low cost satellites
  • One of the most ambitious technology companies in Texas

Our focus is still on software and internet companies. However, we’re not afraid to break our own rules to make an exception for something great.

4 Startups Pitch to Daimler AG Executives at Capital Factory

Daimler

Capital Factory is the center of gravity for entrepreneurs in Austin. Last year more than 30,000 entrepreneurs, programmers and designers gathered day and night for meetups, classes and coworking. We meet the best entrepreneurs in Austin and introduce them to potential investors, employees and customers. It is the perfect example of the right place at the right time. The University of Texas provides a supply of raw talent, Capital Factory helps turn that talent and their good ideas into real businesses, and SXSW shines an international spotlight on it all. Many of the same things that make Austin attractive to the rest of the world also make it attractive to entrepreneurs. This was no different for the 130 Financial Executives from Daimler we hosted last Wednesday.

Capital Factory was asked by the Daimler executive team to share our experience on what it means to be an entrepreneur in Austin and how their team could  bring the startup culture back to their community. Our team curated interactive programming for Daimler executives by setting up office hours, a pitch competition & a workshop with 3 Day Startup; a program in Austin designed to teach high school students how to start their own company in 3 days.

The Daimler team met with Mellie Price, Capital Factory Director (Fund), who gave an overview of what makes our space Austin’s entrepreneurial center of gravity.  In addition, Daimler executives interacted with young companies in a speed-dating style format during an event we like to call “Epic Office Hours”. The executives were then split into four groups to experience some of the challenges and milestones that our companies face in starting a business. These groups met with more than a dozen companies and entrepreneurs of different backgrounds and industries.

Towards the end of the day, Daimler Automotive Group heard four of our most dynamic companies pitch their solutions to customer retention in the automotive industry during a high-energy competition hosted at Capital Factory. Plus, created their own startup with the non-profit 3 Day Startup, and rounded out their journey with a tour of our space.

The following companies participated in the pitch competition ending the day with Daimler executives announcing an epic tie between Nuve and SocialMatterz.

Aceable: Changing required education by making it fun, convenient, and effective. Required education are all the courses you have to take for one reason or another (defensive driving, continuing education, pre-license education, corporate training, etc).

Nuve:  Revolutionizing how asset protection is done in an Internet of Things world.  We develop and manufacturer advanced hardware sensors and smart locks that help transportation companies protect against fuel and cargo theft.  We are serving a global market in the transportation and infrastructure industries

Smart Picture Technologies: SPT has engineered a unique, powerful and patent-pending mobile technology platform that allows users to capture and share Smart Pictures. (3D image capture application for smartphones and tablets)

SocialMatterz: Automates complex sales and marketing lead campaigns online turning social media messaging into conversations and conversions.

We hope that Daimler walked away with great insights into starting a company, and how to bring the inspiring Austin startup culture back with them.

VentureLab Brings Youth Entrepreneurship Education to Austin, Paving Way for High School Students to Learn Startup Fundamentals

San Antonio-based innovation and entrepreneurship academy partners with Capital Factory to host High School Startup, one of four summer youth programs providing hands-on instruction to help local students learn the key mindsets of entrepreneurial thinking, leadership, design and creativity

(Austin, TX) June 5, 2015 – VentureLab, a non-profit entrepreneurship and innovation academy for young people, today announced its Austin debut with High School Startup, one of four entrepreneurship education programs launching this summer to teach students startup fundamentals to help them discover their passions and use technology to turn ideas into products or services that can possibly change the world. High School Startup is an in-depth two- week camp that will run from June 15-June 26, 2015 at Capital Factory in the heart of downtown. Cost for the course is $650.

“Austin is a mecca for budding entrepreneurs, and we saw an opportunity to bring our academy to the market as an extended resource to help high school students take what they learn in the classroom, and physically apply that knowledge in an inspiring entrepreneurial environment,” said Cristal Glangchai, founder and CEO, VentureLab. “By partnering with Capital Factory, we will give students the full experience of taking an idea and carrying it through to fruition. High School Startup is the first of four camps scheduled this summer with the latter focusing on K-8. We couldn’t be more excited to be part of Austin’s rich entrepreneurial spirit, and look forward to what’s to come.”

VentureLab is strongly committed to the Austin Community and are offering ten course scholarship opportunities. Students can apply for the scholarship here. Registration is now open to all Austin and surrounding area high school students who are interested, and encouraged, to enroll.

High School Startup is designed as a fun, hands-on knowledge academy to teach students, aged 14-19, what it takes to start a business. They will learn to develop leadership and team building skills, and establish stronger critical and creative thinking that will be applied to creating tangible products or services. Students will experience a new found confidence that will carry into their primary education as they move towards future career endeavors—and possible entrepreneurship.

Student teams will each have a mentor throughout the course to help brainstorm, conduct market research, customer development, build, prototype and launch their product or service, and crowd fund for startup cash. The program concludes with ‘demo day’ where teams have the opportunity pitch and demo their offerings to experienced Austin investors and entrepreneurs, and launch on the spot to potentially generate sales. Post academy, students will be given tools and access to mentors to continue pursuing their ideas.

“When VentureLab approached us to host their first camp for high school students in the Austin area, we jumped on the chance to introduce more entrepreneurial young people into our community,” said Joshua Baer, founder, Capital Factory. “I applaud VentureLab for inspiring the next generation of world-changers, and look forward to seeing them working on a business at Capital Factory some day.”

VentureLab develops experiential learning summer programs that introduce, inspire and encourage young people as young as five to be next generation innovators and entrepreneurs through inspiration, experiential learning and mentorship. With school education focusing on teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts, VentureLab underscores the importance of, and is the extension for, students to learn how to apply this knowledge to develop fundamental skills that can help them create inventions, solve society challenges and launch their own startup.

Meet VentureLab Founder Cristal Glangchai and watch her explain why she started VentureLab.

June Meetup Organizer of the Month | Meet Anthony Blatner of the Austin iPhone Developers Meetup!

Anthony Blatner heads up the Austin iPhone Developer Meetup. They’re here because both Austin and iOS are awesome.  We meet monthly to network, present education content, showcase apps and work, discuss iOS development, and share tip and tricks, while helping each other through bugs.

Why did you begin organizing this Meetup?
I was an active member for a long time and asked to take it over. I’ve really enjoyed running the group and meeting so many local developers — we have a great group. Mobile is one of my favorite areas, and it’s fun curating content that I’m personally interested in, and that I know the group is as well.

Anth

What do you do when you aren’t organizing Meetups, professionally or in your free time?
I enjoy running (training for the Austin marathon), going to music festivals (preparing for TomorrowWorld), and sitting in Austin traffic.

What are you looking forward to most in the 2015 Austin tech and startup scene?
SXSW is always my favorite week (and a half) of the year, and this year was no exception. I love seeing events that are uniquely Austin (big fan of
the Startup Crawl), and we’re looking to keep bringing more events for mobile.

What do you love about hosting at Capital Factory?
Capital Factory is known for startup tech in Austin, and our group is all about that. Everyone is familiar with CF and many of our members work here or with organizations in CF, so it makes for the perfect place to hold our events.

Do you attend any other Meetups besides your own?
I think I’ve joined nearly every Austin Meetup group, and I have the spam email to prove it.

What do you love about living in Austin?
The vibe — Austin is a great city with great people. There’s tons of opportunity, and optimistic, motivated people working on awesome things. I love being involved in it.

Smart and talented people need to be encouraged to cross pollinate and execute their ideas in a fast-paced try, fail, learn, repeat environment.
