Startup GamesSession: Startup Games: Taking Non-Profit Nerd Athleticism Global

Speaker: President, Gillian Willson

Startup Games is the pinnacle of nerd athleticism and has become a fixture of the Austin tech event calendar – now we’re taking it global. In short, we take 16 startups, find their best “nerd athletes”, and have an Olympics-style competition with games like ping pong, foosball, flip cup, etc with each company playing for a charity meaningful to them. President Gillian and VP Adam will talk about running a non-profit like a tech startup and the plan of attack for the new challenges they are facing in bringing their event to other cities.

TicketbudSession: Beyond the Ticket: Skipping Lines and Making Friends

Speaker: CTO and Founding Engineer, Brandon Harris

Waiting in lines is always a major stress factor for organizers. Attendees don’t appreciate it much either. See how we plan to reduce queue times. We want to give you more than just a ticket, we want to help you with your experience.

Vuka

Session: The Importance of Convergence

Speaker: CEO and Pilot, Brian Schoenbaum

While technology has allowed people to easily connect with a far broader network than ever before, it often takes people coming together to really make things happen. Join us for a discussion with Brian Schoenbaum, Founder & Pilot of Vuka, a co-working and event space in South Austin. Brian will talk with a member of the Vuka community and discuss how gathering with like-minded people enables leaders to be their best selves, and in turn do their best work. Where companies create not only market value but also contribute to the social, environmental and civic good, perhaps the “power of convening” becomes even more relevant. Positive change begins with inspired people.

May Meetup Organizer of the Month | Meet David Vogelpohl of the AUSOME Meetup!

David Vogelpohl is the organizer for AUSOME (Austin Online Marketing for Entrepreneurs). Ausome is Austin’s #1 online marketing meetup. Their amazing lineup of speakers every month have included some of the brightest minds in online marketing such as Brian Combs (Found of Apogee), Bryan Eisenberg (Author “Call to Action”, “Waiting for your Cat to Bark”), Chris Pearson (Thesis), David Vogelpohl (Marketing Clique), Tony Wright (Wright SEM), Brian Massey (The Conversion Scientist), Roger Dooly (Author of Brainfluence), Shawn Collins (Affiliate Summit), and much more!  If you want national conference quality content in your own back yard, check out Ausome!

Why did you begin organizing this Meetup?

I took it over after it was abandoned by about 3 different organizers had dropped it and had been dormant for over a year. Austin had one other large online marketing meetup at the time (that one is gone now), but there were still a lot of people looking for quality online marketing content. We started holding the meetup and people showed up so we kept doing it. Austin claims a huge number of nationally known online marketers as residents so we were able to start scoring presenters who are keynote speakers at major conferences and super smart. I’m guessing it wouldn’t have been this easy to do organizing an online marketing meetup in Houston.

What do you do when you aren’t organizing Meetups, professionally or in your free time?

I run a company called Marketing Clique which provides advanced web development and online marketing services. I also speakDavidV at national events like Pubcon, Affiliate Summit, and WordCamp. Have two awesome boys (6 & 2) and with the tiny little bit of free time I have left, I love playing FPS games on my Xbox 🙂

What are you looking forward to most in the 2015 Austin tech and startup scene?

Seeing it grow. There’s still a huge demand for qualified online marketers and developers in Austin. I think we all benefit from contributing to the community and trying to make it grow. This is what I’m most looking forward to this year in the Austin Tech scene.

What do you love about hosting at Capital Factory?

Not being a pitch man for booze. Our original venue was a bar. The setup was fine (big room, screen, audio), but there was a drink and food minimum. Every month I would get up like some sort of sports arena beer guy and solicit the crowd to make sure they ordered food and drinks.

Of course all kidding aside, the thing I love most outside of the awesome venue is the support staff. Ashleigh and those that came before her are invaluable to pulling off our meetup. I really don’t know what we’d do without them.

Do you attend any other Meetups besides your own?

Yes. I attend a variety of meetups from time to time. My favorites are the PHP Meetup and the Austin WordPress Meetup.

What do you love about living in Austin?

Because it’s like living in San Francisco with better weather and a healthy dose of Texan pragmatism.

Each year SXSW attracts thousands of festival attendees to Texas for musical artists, film debuts and emerging tech  right at the center of Austin.  The festival has a reputation of being a breeding ground for new music, innovative ideas and creative technologies. This time of year, Capital Factory really lives up to its name as the entrepreneurial center of gravity. For 2015, we collectively hosted 32 events, 12 public tours and 5 days of our VIP lounge. Our community kicks off SXSWi with 12,500 other people and 85+ Austin startups at one of the biggest parties of the year, ATX Startup Crawl. Startup Crawl is a fantastic opportunity to meet Austin startups, drop off a resume or meet a few new friends before the madness that is SXSW. If you’re a baller and gained access to our VIP lounge, you might have rubbed elbows with some of our notable guests such as Stephen Wolfram, Jonathan Coon, Bob Metcalfe + many others. Our lounge remains open for the remainder of SXSW and hosts venture capitalists, CEOs, mentors, press and government officials. Capital Factory hosted a total of 13 government officials with accompanying roundtables so that our members could discuss important issues such as net neutrality, immigration and more. This, of course, is a non-partisan effort and we welcome elected officials looking to connect with the technology community.

One notable government official, Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, alongside Jonathan Coon (CEO & Founder of 1-800-CONTACTS), and John Thornton (General Partner Austin Ventures) graciously judged the Capital Factory SXSW A-List Pitch where Austin Mayor Stever Adler kicked off the event. The A-List Pitch showcased 5 Capital Factory startups including Aceable, Chiron Health, Goodybag, Loop and Tie, and Manager Complete. These Austin technology companies are early-stage startups ready for Series A funding that have qualified for a matching investment from the Capital Factory Fund and our venture capital partners. Most have initial revenue, however, some are pre-revenue. The following Austin technology companies are seed stage startups and have raised less than one million in funding. During the Capital Factory Fast Pitch, Bluehub Health, Curb, Feathr, Pen Pal Schools, SocialMatterz, Student Loan Benefits, Tastebud and Togga all delivered rapid fire three minute pitches where Student Loan Benefits won Audience Choice. Student Loan Benefits has developed a modern employee benefit that allows companies to boost their recruiting & retention success by reducing their employees student debt (Think 401k for student loans). To learn more about Student Loan Benefits visit their AngelList profile and follow them on Twitter @GoSLB.

Capital Factory Welcomes Atlassian as Newest Community Sponsor

The city of Austin’s densely populated downtown area has emerged in recent years as ground zero for the city’s startup community to live, work and play. And though it’s not immune to growing pains other booming metro areas grapple with, Austin still manages to maintain it’s charm topping every list and attracting entrepreneurs/companies from around the world.

Just last year, Atlassian chose Austin, Texas as its new home bringing in 300+ jobs and a company culture that fits right in! Their company culture transcends their daily work as founding members of the Pledge 1% Organization. With their 1:1:1 model, giving 1% of annual profit to charities, 1% of employee time dedication to Foundation Projects, and 1% of company equity donated to the Foundation, they are changing the dynamic of what it means to give back. The Australian company has over 1,000 employees, offices in 4 cities, over 40,000 customers, many millions of users and a love for community. Capital Factory is happy to announce that we will be working with Atlassian on a series of community events/meetups that aim to support the already bustling startup scene deep in the heart of Texas.

This week we’re happy to host the President of Atlassian, Jay Simons,  at Capital Factory for a talk on what motivated Atlassian to make the move to the Lone Star State. The event is currently open to members of the Capital Factory community, however, with this new partnership, we plan on bringing more community focused meetups hosted by Atlassian right in their office space. In addition to events throughout the year, Atlassian provides organizations and entities with free licensing of Atlassian products (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket & HipChat) for immensely supporting the startup community. We look forward to working with the Atlassian team and the rest of the Capital Factory partner community to nurture the ever growing startup scene. Keep up with future partnership announcements by reading our blog and liking us on Facebook. Learn more about Atlassian and their products by visiting their website at www.atlassian.com.
