The Accelerator comes to the Dallas Entrepreneur Center

The Dallas Entrepreneur Center (The DEC) is welcoming us to Dallas at the West End and soon the other locations such as Addison and Denton. Members of The DEC now have access to the Capital Factory and 1776 mentor networks in-person at The DEC or online via Skype. They also have access to work from Capital Factory in Austin and tap into our network for introductions to investors and strategic corporate partners.

“Teaming up with The DEC is the first step for us in building a super connected startup megatropolis between the major Texas cities,” said Joshua Baer, Executive Director of Capital Factory. “By leveraging the strengths of different entrepreneurial ecosystems, we can make Texas the best state for startups and entrepreneurs in the US.”

“Having offices in both Austin and Dallas is a competitive advantage that lets us attract the best talent and sell into all of the large businesses based in Texas,” said Ben Lamm, CEO of Conversable, a startup company that launched at Capital Factory in Austin and expanded to The DEC in Dallas.

Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are 4 of the 11 largest cities in the country, and connecting these cities will help to raise billions of dollars in capital and unleash thousands of diverse entrepreneurs. Texas is also home to more than 50 Fortune 500 companies, but funding has largely been untapped due to the disconnect between the entrepreneur and investment communities throughout the state.

“The DEC is excited to participate in this statewide initiative and we believe Capital Factory’s expansion into Dallas will allow entrepreneurs across North Texas to leverage the immense resources and network of their programs,” said Trey Bowles, CEO of The DEC. “We believe that by partnering with Capital Factory, we can combine the strengths of both ecosystems for the success of entrepreneurs across the state.”

“Austin and Dallas are consistently ranked as two of the top up-and-coming startup hubs,” said Steve Case, co-founder of AOL, chairman and CEO of investment firm Revolution, and creator of the Rise of the Rest platform that promotes startup hubs outside of Silicon Valley. “I’m excited to see the synergies that Capital Factory and The DEC can create to support the broader Texas tech community.”

The first public event Capital Factory will be hosting at The DEC is the How to Meet Investors in Texas and Ask Me Anything with Joshua Baer on Tuesday, September 5 from 4–7pm. The event will be live-streamed over the Internet back to Austin at Capital Factory.

This is step one of our Texas Startup Manifesto.

Five cutting edge AI startups get the chance to pitch for $100,000 from Austin’s top Angel Investors

If you’ve been paying attention to the tech news lately, you know that one of the hottest trends of 2017 is around Artificial Intelligence, or “AI.” As the #1 best city in the world for tech (according to the World Economic Forum), Austin has been at the center of this trend. “Austin is emerging as a national powerhouse in the machine-learning AI sphere,” said Bruce Porter, artificial intelligence expert and Chair of UT Austin’s computer science department.

Jonathan Packer, Senior Vice President of Global Technology and Innovation at the Austin Chamber of Commerce, agrees “AI is important, you can see that not only in the number of startups, but also in the interest established companies have in AI. Large companies in every sector are looking at AI, which is creating a lot of opportunity in AI for startups.”

Austin’s top entrepreneurs have banded together to help one awesome AI startup take advantage of that opportunity with a $100,000 investment, and the chance to join the startup accelerator at Capital Factory, Austin’s center of gravity for entrepreneurs. Any startup focused on AI technology can apply on Angel List to pitch at our funding day on July 28th.

“We want to see Austin entrepreneurs thinking bigger and shooting for the stars. If you’re really trying to change the world, we will help you get started,” said Brett Hurt, CEO of data.world and founder of Bazaarvoice, Coremetrics, and Hurt Family Investments (and one of the angel investors backing the competition).

Josh Kerr, Capital Factory Entrepreneur in Residence and another investor backing the competition, concurs saying that “as far as emerging technologies go, AI is going to impact the world with an even magnitude greater than smartphones or the web.”

So what will it take to win?

We are looking for AI companies that have built a compelling MVP and have started to gain early customers, but most of all we want to see great people who we believe in and have demonstrated that they can be resourceful and learn from their mistakes.

The winner will receive:

  • $100,000 cash investment on a SAFE or Convertible Note. We will make you detailed offer before you decide to participate in the final round of the competition.
  • Special access to an A-List of Austin’s top entrepreneurs who add value far beyond the money you received.
  • 1 year of membership in Capital Factory’s startup accelerator.
  • 1 year of unlimited co-working at Capital Factory.
  • Hundreds of thousands of dollars in free hosting credits from Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM Softlayer, Microsoft & Rackspace, plus many other cloud services you use.
  • Access to the Capital Factory Mentor network.
  • Company formation if needed by startup law firm Kastner, Huggins, Reddien & Gravelle (KHRG).

Think you’ve got a shot? Apply now on AngelList to be one of 5 teams selected to pitch on Funding Day on July 28th. You could walk away with $100,000!

Austin Tech Just Got Bigger

We came, we conquered, we stepped into a new reality, and got down with some seriously tall dancing robots. A big thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the opening of our first floor space. With this expansion, we’ve got 9,500 more square feet to help entrepreneurs keep kicking ass. We have offices, coworking, events, meetups, VR/AR…you know, all things tech.

Capital Factory is the “Center of Gravity for Entrepreneurs,” and with this expansion, we’ve grown to also become the Center of Gravity for tech events and emerging technologies. Our Ambassador of Emerging Technologies is here to educate you on all things VR in our VR Startup Village where we house Austin’s hottest VR startups. You can also test out some of the hottest VR/AR games in our new VR Arcade. Step inside Rick and Morty’s lab with the Rick & Morty Simulator: Virtual Rick-ality or getting your flow on in a Guided VR Meditation.

It was an honor to share the ribbon cutting ceremony with Austin Mayor, Steve Adler, and Texas State Representative, Lloyd Doggett. During the ceremony, Executive Director of Capital Factory, Joshua Baer, shared his ever-growing vision for the future of Capital Factory saying “when we started we were investors, mostly investing in companies and then we saw the power of coworking and bringing all these people together and…we realized what we needed was a place for the community to come together for events and…[Capital Factory became]…the place where everybody [can come] together.”

Since Capital Factory’s inception in 2009, Joshua has become a thought leader in emerging technologies saying that virtual reality is “a good fit for startups and coworking spaces. It costs a lot of money to buy all the [virtual reality] equipment and takes up a lot of space. [This is] a good thing to share for multiple people to use.”

During our Grand Opening, kids of all ages got to experience virtual reality for free with Capital Factory’s VR team. Mayor Adler even joined in on the fun–testing his basketball skills on the virtual NBA court.

All in all, we couldn’t be more excited to share this space with Austin’s tech community. Joshua said is best, “we’ve opened up some incredible new event space to make available to the startup community for all kinds of other great things to happen.” We hope to see you in our new space soon.

Want to experience more from our Grand Opening? Watch KXAN’s review, along with their 360˚ video of the ribbon cutting ceremony, and browse through our photo album.

Capital Factory Brings the NewCo Festival Back to Austin this June

NewCo_Sched_Austin_1200x500_v2

With so many festivals and conferences in Austin, it can be hard to get them all straight. But NewCo Austin isn’t your average festival or conference. This event has the focus of a business conference and the feel of a music festival, which makes it the ideal place to connect businesses on a mission to the people who care.

NewCo Austin Host Companies, or HostCo’s, provide the backbone of the festival. These companies can be brand new and just getting started on their mission, or existing companies that are doing something in a new way. For example, computer technology giant, Dell, recently started implementing sustainable alternatives to polyethylene shipping cushions.

The idea of NewCo Austin is to showcase purpose-driven companies in their native environment. Instead of bringing convention goers together in a ballroom, participants from executives, entrepreneurs, investors and future influencers travel from one HostCo to another to experience their workspace first-hand.

NewCo Austin will take place on June 20–21, 2017, at Capital Factory and in the surrounding offices in Austin of other HostCo’s. Sound like your type of convention or, rather, festival? Applications are open now for HostCo’s! Apply here; we can’t wait to see everyone again this year!

Are you interested in attending the festival? Buy your tickets here!

Why You Should Relocate Your Startup to Austin

(Contributed by Grace Vroom, Capital Factory Startup Champion)

For Austinites, we don’t mind sharing the fact that a U.S. News and World Report declared Austin the #1 Best City To Live In or that over a hundred and fifty people move here every day because our city really is just that great.

But we’re more than just tacos, sunshine, and music festivals. Maybe you’ve already heard that Austin is the #1 Startup City in the U.S. or that we had the 2nd largest startup growth of any city in the U.S. last year. Either way, entrepreneurs are continuing to move their startups to ATX in order to take advantage of our community, talent, and affordability.

Capital Factory has been home to several of these companies and cultivates a comfortable environment for newly relocated entrepreneurs. Joe Troyen, with PenPal Schools, says that Capital Factory is “where [he] met both of [his] PenPal Schools co-founders and most of [their] original investors.”

Now his learning platform is being used by over 100,000 students in 170 countries.

Marcelo Vieira, CEO of restaurant discount app Tastebud, found that being a part of Capital Factory upon arriving in Austin meant having “the immediate access to great successful entrepreneurs that have already been on your side of the table.” He says, “starting your company can be a lonely up and down affair no matter what type of issue, there is someone at Capital Factory that can help.”

He wasn’t too upset with life outside of Capital Factory, either.

J.D. Chang made the move from Washington D.C. in 2015 to grow his marketing company SocialMatters.ai. He says that in Austin the “cost for starting a company is lower, in headcount and overhead. But talent is absolutely on par with anywhere else!”

Eight years ago, Chuck Gordon, the founder of full-service storage company Sparefoot, said farewell to California, came to Austin, and found that “the mentors and the entire Austin community were so welcoming and encouraging. It really felt like everyone wanted us to be successful which I think is pretty unique to Austin.” SchooLinks founder, Katie Fang came to Austin in search of what Chuck found, “a support network and like-minded entrepreneurs” and said she got exactly that.

When asked what advice she would give to entrepreneurs moving to Austin, Katie says it for all of us…

Five entrepreneurs pitch for $100,000 in seed funding

Every week we meet incredible entrepreneurs from all over the country and all over the world who would move to Austin if they only had some funding. This April, one startup is going to get their chance! We’ll fly five of them to Austin for an epic pitch-off resulting in one of them receiving $100,000 in seed funding and a year of free access to Capital Factory’s coworking facility and mentor network.

Capital Factory has moved more than a dozen startups to Austin in one way or another over the past few years — starting with the first company we ever invested in — SpareFoot. Fresh off the excitement of SXSW, Capital Factory is thrilled to announce that this April we’re moving another startup to Austin — this time with a $100,000 investment waiting for them.

Whether you were around to experience the convergence of thousands of talented entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to the city first hand or have heard about the buzz of SXSW and the startup scene in Austin, we want to invite you to participate in this competition.

It’s not like it’s hard to get people to move here — we’re the fastest growing city in the country. Austin has it’s own draw and it has “emerged as one of the hottest startup hubs in the country” according to Hugh Forrest, Chief Programming Officer for SXSW (and one of the angel investor backing this competition).

In addition to the $100,000 investment, you get free coworking at Capital Factory, free server hosting, and a lot bunch of other perks and discounts to make the cash last as long as possible.

What will it take to win? We are looking for companies that have built a compelling MVP and have started to gain early customers, but most of all we want to see great people who we believe in and have demonstrated that they can be resourceful and learn from their mistakes.

Any tech or consumer startup can apply on AngelList by April 14th to be selected to pitch at Funding Day on Friday, April 28. Five finalists will receive $500 toward airfare and the opportunity to pitch in front of top Austin investors and the Capital Factory mentors, which are some of the most successful entrepreneurs in Texas on Monday, May 1.

Some Austin Facts:

  • Hotbed of tech talent — there is steady pipeline of talent from UT Austin, one of the largest universities in the country. UT Austin has the largest graduating class of CS students of any department ranked in the top 10 in the US. Talent in Austin’s isn’t just more affordable, it’s easier to retain talent because they are less likely to get poached by the hot startup in Silicon Valley. Indeed.com said that Austin is the best place for a software engineer to get a job where his paycheck goes the farthest compared to the cost of living.
  • Top entrepreneurial city — The Kauffman Foundation ranked Austin the number 1 startup metro in the U.S. for the second year in a row. CNBC said Austin is the best city in the U.S. to start a new business. U.S. News & World Report just ranked Austin the number one city in the U.S. to live in.
  • Access to capital — Austin has almost a dozen venture capital firms and a dozen more in the fundraising stages. More and more investors from the east, west and middle coasts have their eyes on Austin and are making investments here. The Central Texas Angel Network is one of the most active angel groups in North America. It’s easy to raise seed funding and it’s not harder than anywhere else outside of Silicon Valley to raise a Series A (and much easier than most places).
  • Business Friendly Regulation — Texas has no state income tax, meaning more of your salary expense goes directly to your employees and has been consistently ranked as one of the best states for small businesses.
  • Retail and logistics center — Austin is home to Whole Food Headquarters and Dell Technologies and is a large centrally located logistics hub for many businesses making access to large companies’ management teams highly accessible for partnerships. Apple’s largest headquarters is in Austin (more employees than Cupertino!) and we also have large offices for Google and Facebook.

Competition details:

  • $100,000 cash investment on a SAFE or Convertible Note. We will make you detailed offer before you decide to participate in the final round of the competition.
  • Special access to an A-List of Austin’s top entrepreneurs who add value far beyond the money you received
  • 1 year of unlimited co-working at Capital Factory
  • Access to the Capital Factory Mentor network
  • Hundreds of thousands of dollars in free hosting credits from Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM Softlayer, Microsoft & Rackspace plus many other cloud services you use.
